Living in California, I usually begin to anticipate warmer weather in March, however, it seems our winter here on the mountain is just beginning. Frigid weather is slamming the East Coast as well.
Although Nature has decided on a long Winter, I have been pining for play dresses for the Spring and Summer months. The kind of dress one would wear for a frolic in the desert or a rock and roll concert in Golden Gate Park.
I love a good vintage cotton dress and have a very special place in my heart for handmade block print fabrics from India. The cotton is soft and, because it is printed by hand, every yard of fabric has unique and lovely variations in the pattern.
Hand blocking artists use hand carved wooden stamps to create the colorful patterns on the fabrics and have for generations.
The cotton receives a wash prior to the printing process, often in the river to save on water consumption. The fabric is then dyed with natural dyes to create saturated colors and charming, one-of-a-kind prints.
Every step of the process of creating this lovely fabric is done by hand by artists in India. It takes skill and patience to create the intricate, and colorful designs.
The incredible quality and gorgeous prints are not a well-kept secret in the vintage clothing industry. Indian cotton dresses and skirts are some of the most desirable pieces out there.
I don’t think it’s ever too early in the year to start buying some gorgeous Indian cotton dresses for your summer adventures!
