Southern California is suffering in 100 degree weather and even on our more temperate mountain, the thermometers are reading in the 80s. So, why then have I been scouring eBay and Etsy for a warm, vintage winter coat in July?
There are some online vintage dealers who will hoard all of their seasonal wares and release them for the appropriate season. Other dealers, however, just put everything up for sale as soon as they get it in stock.
As you might imagine, winter coats might not be on the mind of even the most discerning vintage clothing lover, in July. While they are frequenting music festivals or road tripping to new and magical destinations, summertime gals are more concerned with finding comfy and cute travel shoes than they are with prepping for the cold winter months.
I, on the other hand, am a firm believer in shopping for vintage bathing suits in the winter and warm coats in the summer.
Online vintage clothing on sites such as eBay and Etsy depend on a large audience for customer demand, and in the off season, the audience just isn’t that big.
As a result, customers aren’t urgently hitting the buy button on all the best pieces and the good stuff tends to be available for a little while longer.
Despite the fact that we live in Southern California, a land renowned for hot summers and temperate winters, we do tend to have pretty cold and snowy winters here on the mountain. This last winter was so cold and snowy that I literally wore my favorite vintage coat to pieces.
It was a black, faux fur coat with a big, black shearling collar and cuffs. It was fabulous. I purchased it for $10 at my favorite regular Highland Park garage sale.
So, needless to say, I now need a new coat for this coming winter. Because it’s next to impossible to find a warm winter coat in our adjacent California cities which all stay warm in the wintertime, online shops are really the only source.
In an attempt to find a statement winter coat, I started shopping this month for a warm and cozy vintage gem. If you are like me, wearing the perfect, dramatic vintage coat is one of life’s greatest pleasures.
I found a gorgeous coat to take me through this winter and I will updated this post with a picture when it arrives in the mail. Until then, I thought I’d leave you with some gorgeous coats I stumbled upon on my strange shopping journey.
